The Best Grooming Products to Transform Dry Hair

If you have dry hair, you experience less grime and buildup than guys who have scalps that produce more oil (which is basically like a natural, all-day leave-in conditioner). That means your hair can often become brittle, wilting, and prone to breaking, making it harder to style.

The 7 Best Products for Thick, Wiry Hair

Like overly oily or thinning hair, it’s entirely possible to personalize your grooming regimen to overcome your natural dryness, and to condition the hair so it stays soft and stylable, You’ve got your work cut out for you, but with the proper products and regimen, it’s smooth sailing.

Here are some of our favorites—consider it a push in the right direction.

Jack Black MP10 Nourishing Oil

With a blend of 10 natural oils (argan, marula, and grape seed are the most prominent), this oil works on hair, beards, faces, and more. Use it with your usual go-to styling product; it delivers the necessary nourishment to keep strands soft yet defined all day—and with a natural shine to boot. You can also use it on its own if you have longer hair to tame frizz and flyaways. It'll nurture dryer-than-usual ends to prevent splitting, too.

Shu Uemura Absolue Overnight Hair Serum

An overnight hair mask that won’t stain your pillows, Shu Uemura’s serum absorbs quick and delivers high-powered nourishment to hair. It can tame the effects of humidity (i.e. frizz), while preserving natural shine and buoyancy. You can go right into your styling regimen in the morning, since there’s no need to rinse it out.

American Crew Matte Styling Cream

Don’t be befuddled by the key ingredients in American Crew’s styling cream. Panthenol is a B5 derivative that strengthens the hair and thickens its appearance, and benzophenones help shield it from environmental damage. Together, they add moisture and prevent anything from compromising hydration levels throughout the day. You'll get shine-free, lightweight, medium-hold style as a bonus.

Kiehl’s Damage Repairing & Rehydrating Leave-In Conditioner

Mix a few drops of Kiehl’s leave-in conditioner with your daily styler, or use it as a lightweight styling cream on its own. It's loaded with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and moringa oil, a trio that delivers and preserves moisture and defends hair against the elements. (If you use a blow dryer, you can also apply it before drying, so it helps shield from heat damage. But also, you should pick up an ionic dryer, per our tip at the end of this list.) This product will keep hair hydrated and soft all day; it's the perfect complement to a nightly serum.

Davines MOMO Shampoo

This gentle gel shampoo pulls away excess grime and product without compromising the hair’s natural moisture. “What moisture?” you ask. Touché, but since you still need to wash your head, do it with a shampoo like Davines’, which uses cartucciaru melon to soften and nourish hair, as well as a host of ingredients to strengthen and protect it: Vitamin A and C, sinc, potassium, and phosphorus.

Hair Rituel by Sisley Restructuring Conditioner

If you’re super serious about fighting back against stubborn, dry hair, then use Sisley’s conditioner. With Vitamin B5, shea and coconut oils, as well as cotton proteins, it resuscitates dry, lifeless hair. In an instant, it feels fuller, softer, and more cooperative.

Parlux 385 Powerlight Ionic Hair Dryer

If you use a hair dryer to style your hair, invest in an ionic one. They dry hair quickly without the same heat-damaging effects of other devices. This one from Parlux is a great pick. It dries hair from the inside out. It’s also low-volume, lightweight, and high-powered, so you can tote it on trips and spend less time on your morning regimen.

The 7 Best Products for Thick, Wiry Hair

Some guys would do anything to have thick hair, but not you: You’d trade a limb if it meant you could find the right thick hair products to keep your full and furious mane under control. You watch with envy as other guys go through the day with effortless, weightless styles, while you contemplate a permanent buzz-cut just to save your sanity.

The 7 Best Curly Hair Products for Great Hair Days Every Day

Don’t give in to the clippers yet, though. You just have to learn how to tame the mane, and there are plenty of thick hair products to help you do it. With these simple additions to your hair care and styling routine, your perspective on thick, wiry locks will definitely change for the better.

Kevin Murphy Smooth Again Conditioner

Kevin Murphy’s conditioner uses keratin proteins to soften and smoothen thick, unruly hair. With a blend of oils and butters (like cocoa seed butter, Brazil nut butter, and monoi oil), it hydrates, tames any curls, minimizes breakage, and defends against split ends and frizzing. Use it daily to keep hair soft and smooth, and since it washes away grime, you can reduce shampoo usage to once per week.

Function of Beauty Leave-In Treatment

Complete Function Of Beauty’s questionnaire, and you'll get a unique shampoo and conditioner for your specific hair type. Now you can also add a leave-in treatment to your order, which will increase the nourishing and softening effects of the shampoo and conditioner. Just comb it into your hair like a styling cream and wear it all day long. It tames hair while keeping it hydrated, and it shields each strand from UV exposure.

Bumble and Bumble Thick (H)air Styler

Unruly as it may be, thick hair can actually minimize the time you spend on your styling regimen. This is a heat-free cream styler, which means you apply it to towel-dried hair and let it set to avoid the drying and volumizing effects of a blow dryer. It softens, tames, de-frizzes, prevents split ends, and blocks UV rays, too.

Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3

Before you wash or condition your hair, first rinse it clean and then comb in some of Olaplex’s Hair Perfector. Let it set for 10 minutes, and then continue with your usual regimen. The treatment was formulated by two chemists who formulated it with ingredients that relax, soften, and fortify the structure of the hair, making it more cooperative—finally.

Baxter of California Grooming Cream

Guys with wiry hair can approach stylers in one of two ways: First, you can use a soft product that adds shine and definition without actually taming anything aside from frizz. These will showcase the volume and strength of your hair, but they’re not going to lock it into place. Baxter of California’s Grooming Cream is one such product. Typically we’d recommend it to guys with finer, more relaxed hair, but it’s just as useful if you use it with the right intentions. Add a touch of hair oil to it, too, if you want even more shine to pop through.

[$20; baxterofcalifornia.com]

Firsthand Clay Pomade

On the other hand, you probably want a high-hold styler for most days—something that will let you lock in a combed-back style without worrying about it coming undone by noon. Firsthand’s Clay Pomade is exactly that. It gives you a matte finish, and you can use it to prop up more volumized styles. If you like the product but want more shine, drop in a pinch of hair oil.

Old Spice Beard Oil

Sure, it's made for beards, but this oil is also great for the thick and wiry hair on your head, too. The argan-oil blend helps tame flyaways and prevent split ends, and it adds a little shine and definition to your thick texture. Just put one or two drops into your palm along with a matte styler and apply them together.

The 7 Best Curly Hair Products for Great Hair Days Every Day

When you have naturally curly hair, “perfect hair days” are often few and far between. That’s because each unruly strand has its own agenda—as do external forces like humidity, dehydration, and sun damage. To deal with this, you need curly hair products that can keep your locks hydrated but not weighed down, lifelike but also under control.

How to Get Justin Theroux’s Tousled Hair and Beard Style

That means stocking up on the right shampoo, conditioner, humidity shield, styler, and tools, and dedicating a few extra minutes each morning to applying them—it’ll spare you the frizz and fuss throughout the day. Here are our recs for the best curly hair products to try out.

SheaMoisture Detangling Shampoo

If your curls are coiled or afro-textured, they can shrink down and turn lifeless without proper nourishment. SheaMoisture’s sulfate-free shampoo doesn’t just flush away grime and grease; it also bathes hair with coconut oil, cocoa butter, red palm oil, and flaxseed oil. Together, these ingredients hydrate hair and preserve its volume and texture while shielding it from environmental damage and preventing tangles.

Davines Love Curl Shampoo

Fueled by almond extract, Davines’ Love Curl Shampoo preserves the buoyancy of wavy and curly hair. It also delivers a hint of natural shine to each strand, so your hair’s fullness and depth will be on full display. Unlike many other shampoos, this protein- and vitamin-rich formula adds moisture back into the hair (still, as with any shampoo, it’s important to follow a wash with a conditioner).

[$28; us.davines.com]

Sachajuan Curl Conditioner

We don't advise washing your hair every day, since it can strip your hair of its natural, healthy oils. But you may need to do it more often than the average person, since those oils can also weigh curly hair down and compromise natural volume. Your best friend is a daily conditioning product that pumps nutrients back into the hair after a wash, or between washes. Sachajuan’s Curl Conditioner uses the brand’s propietary Ocean Silk Technology to lock in moisture and emphasize the volume and texture of your curls. Just comb it into your hair—in the shower or out—and rinse after one to two minutes.

[$31; sachajuan.com]

Bumble and bumble Curl Defining Creme

Part styler, part leave-in conditioner, this cream helps define curls while blocking damaging UV rays and preventing frizz caused by humidity and dehydration. The oil- and humectant-packed formula keeps the hairs in line—leaving plenty of room for effortless movement. It’s most effective when applied to dry or towel-dried hair, then blown dry with a diffuser.

[$31; bumbleandbumble.com]

Ouai Wave Spray

This spray uses rice proteins to texturize (that also means it's safe to use on color-treated hair) and it lifts hair instead of weighing it down like other products do. It's formulated to tame your locks and prevent them from coming undone during the day, and it adds a natural shine as well.

[$26; theouai.com]

Bio Ionic 10X Ultralight Speed Dryer

Often the best way to maintain control over your unruly curls is to blow dry them into place. Bio Ionic’s dryer does this in less time, preventing heat damage and preserving the moisture and shine in each strand. But to really treat your curls right, grab a diffuser attachment, which concentrates the hot air into smaller pockets to dry thick, curly hair more evenly.

[Blow dryer $29; Diffuser $24; sephora.com]

Living Proof Humidity Shield

Humidity can ruin even the best hair day. That’s why you should have a humidity-shielding spray at the ready, and apply it at the end of your daily haircare regimen. Living Proof’s spray uses a humidity-resistant polymer that blocks both unwanted moisture and UV rays for frizz and sun protection. It helps condition the hair, too, so it won't detract from any other products you’ve applied to your curls.

A New Kind of Athleisure: These Designers Turned MLS Soccer Jerseys into High Fashion

While most fans marked the beginning of a new Major League Soccer season by suiting up in their team’s colors and heading to a game, Adidas and MLS kicked it off with something a little unorthodox: a fashion show.

Adidas, which supplies the kits for all MLS teams, partnered with the league to launch Seams, a project where a handful of young designers reimagined soccer jerseys. The idea came about as a way to connect the sport with the world of fashion—and show that there’s more than one way to wear a jersey.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to marry our culture and trends with all 24 of our clubs,” Rachel Leber, vice president of consumer products at MLS, told Men’s Journal at the event in Los Angeles.

Gear Essentials: How 3 MLS Players Set Up a Perfect Beach Day

Four stylists and designers—Sara Gourlay, Corey T. Stokes, Andrew Andrade, and Pierre Davis—were chosen to rework the jerseys, and they created 48 different looks. We caught up with a few of them backstage before the show to learn more about how they approached the project.

mls adidas

Corey T. Stokes is a New York-based stylist and editor-at-large for High Snobiety. He worked to merge his own tailored aesthetic with the MLS jerseys, which meant rethinking what a jersey represented and styling it in innovative ways.

How 4 Former NFL Players Are Dealing With Life After Football

“I toyed with this idea of a uniform,” he said, adding that he re-envisioned accessories, like sunglasses, and elements of a soccer kit, like shin guards. “I wasn’t too caught up on trying to fit into the soccer world, but more so taking the soccer jersey outside of it.”

adidas mls
Models backstage at Seams BFA, Owen Kolas

Andrew Andrade, a stylist at the LA streetwear boutique FourTwoFour on Fairfax, channeled his lifelong love of soccer into the outfits he put together for Seams.

“I think soccer as a whole is already a fashionable sport,” he said, and he found inspiration from a number of famously stylish players, like Johan Cruyff and Pelé. His looks layered jerseys over and under more traditional staples—like trousers, exaggerated collars, and blazers. He described his collection as “a little bit of fashion, but more a direct reference to soccer.”

Matthew McConaughey on Football and How He Became a Washington Redskins Fan

Sara Gourlay, creative director of the women’s streetwear brand Frankie Collective, has carved a niche for herself by up-cycling vintage pieces and fabrics into imaginative women’s sportswear—pushing for a stronger female presence in streetwear, which is often dominated with men’s looks. For Seams, she applied that same reworking technique to the MLS jerseys.

“I’d say each piece is unique,” she said. “Just like the reworking, we looked at this jersey and said, ‘What can we do with it?’”

Not surprisingly, her outfits pushed the limits of what you can do with a jersey: bags, purses, and even a catsuit made from stitched-together Vancouver Whitecaps uniforms were all featured in her collection. Although the designers were using men’s jerseys, Gourlay made sure her designs included options for women as well.

adidas mls
Models on the runway at Seams BFA, Owen Kolas

The show comes at a pivotal time for soccer, when women’s teams are pushing for equal pay and better representation. Soccer jerseys, as recent redesigns from Adidas and Nike demonstrate, are changing, too. For Gourlay, it’s all about moving beyond tired clichés of what women’s clothing should look like.

“The mindset before was that girls wanted to wear pink,” she says. “But women actually want to wear the same swag as guys. It just needs to be fitted to our bodies.”

adidas mls
Men’s looks modeled on the runway at Seams BFA, Owen Kolas

The show also highlights how much athletic wear has influenced men’s fashion. Athleisure is everywhere, and the idea of incorporating a soccer jersey into runway looks isn’t as far-fetched an idea as it might have been a few years ago. But while sweatpants and hoodies are having their moment in the spotlight, Stokes hopes to see menswear swing back to something a little more formal.

“I think there’s a fine line with making it look on purpose and it just looking sloppy and messy,” he said. “I’m interested in the idea of dressing nice again.”

As for what’s next in men’s fashion, he sees more tailored pieces, like trousers, button-downs, even casual suits becoming more popular alongside athletic-inspired apparel. Like many of the other looks on view at Seams, Stokes’ outfits gave a glimpse at how a new wave of men’s fashion could combine traditional menswear with style elements drawn from the locker room.

“It’s still comfortable, but you focus more so on good tailoring—well-fitted clothes.”

Restoring Health to the New York Harbor

A chilly morning in New York Harbor, and Mikey DeTemple welcomes the crunch of oyster shells beneath his Sperry BIONIC® sneakers, as he tells us about the importance of the creatures to the health of the harbor.

For this world-renowned photographer and filmmaker, who grew up the son of a clammer on Long Island, these glistening bivalves are a heartening sight.

“Oysters are nature’s greatest water cleaners.”

DeTemple has come down to Governor’s Island, braving the chill Atlantic wind, to photograph the results of the Billion Oyster Project—a massive restoration initiative that’s helped New York’s oysters come roaring back to life. By 2035, the Billion Oyster Project expects to distribute one billion live oysters around New York’s acres of reefs, so the Harbor can reclaim its title as the oyster capital of the world.

“Progressively, this is the next logical step after you remove plastics from the water. You fill it with oysters.”

Here at the doorstep of America’s largest city, the world’s most prolific natural oyster habitat had grown lifeless over the course of the twentieth century, due in large part to plastic pollution. “Oysters can’t survive in water that’s filled with plastic,” Mikey says. That’s because oysters are filters—in fact, a single oyster can filter more than 50 gallons of water in 24 hours. But today, thanks to the good work of organizations like Sperry and the Billion Oyster Project, people are finding new ways to keep plastics out of waterways.

“I think change is happening.”

Mikey has spent most of his life in or near water—and he’s used his platforms as a surfer, photographer and filmmaker to draw attention to the issue of single-use plastic pollution. For Mikey, wearing shoes made from recycled bottles is just one more way of educating people about the problem of plastic in the oceans. “All these little things, wearing these shoes, starting these conversations, add up to one big thing,” he says.

Mikey sees his Sperry BIONIC shoes as a perfect way to combat the plastic issue. Each pair is woven from, on average, five recycled plastic bottles recovered from coastal areas. That’s five bottles that won’t end up in our waters, making it possible for organizations like Billion Oyster Project to continue their good work of bringing our oceans, bays and waterways back to a natural state. Indeed, Mikey DeTemple views these shoes—like the oyster shells they stand upon—as a sign of hope. He cites Sperry and the Billion Oyster Project as organizations that lift his spirits.

“Those aren’t government agencies that are doing that,” he says. “Those are people doing that. People who love the water.”

The Best Ways to Heal Acne Scars, According to Dermatologists

When a pimple goes away and leaves a permanent scar in its place—one that appears as an imperfection in the skin—it can be devastating to imagine yourself dealing with it indefinitely. When it comes to healing acne scars, it’s important to get a few opinions—and know what you’re dealing with.

Ultimately, there are two categories. First up: textural irregularities. These are permanent divots that can take various forms on the surface of your skin.

Acne causes inflammation, which destroys the collagen in your skin, says Benjamin Garden, M.D., of Chicago Laser Dermatology. “These irregularities can be very difficult to treat, and there’s nothing that’ll make them fully disappear.” But they can be minimized.

The 5 Most Effective Ways to Regrow Thinning Hair

The second type of scarring is “residual hyperpigmentation,” or dark spots (brown or red) that embed themselves in the skin and take months or even years to heal. They can go away on their own, though the process can be expedited with the right regimen or additional treatment.

Regardless of which type of scarring you’re looking to heal, “the first step is to stop all active acne breakouts,” says Gabriel Martínez-Díaz, M.D., of M.D. Aesthetics & Dermatology. “I try to maximize the combination of medical therapies, such as Accutane (aka isotretinoin, an oral retinol treatment), with numerous minimally invasive procedures. (Read on for examples of some, and visit your dermatologist for the best treatment plan for you, as some drugs like isotretinoins may have adverse side effects.)

Once your existing acne is gone—or if you’re just targeting individual scars with otherwise clear skin— it’s time to address how to minimize the appearance of dark spots and divots. We spoke with numerous board-certified dermatologists for the methods they most often prescribe to their patients.

The 7 Best Customized Hair, Skin, and Cologne Brands for Men

How to Treat Residual Discoloration

Retinol: “My first line of defense is topical retinoids,” says Susan Bard, M.D., of Vive Dermatology. “In addition to combating active acne, it also helps fade any dark marks left behind by the acne and also stimulates collagen production to help fill in some of the depressed scars.” Apply a prescription-strength topical retinoid to your face every night. This should be part of the skincare regimen you use for the rest of your life.

Chemical Peels: “Chemical peels help control acne and help fade dark marks as well as stimulate collagen deposition,” says Bard. Sometimes, the fastest way to a smoother complexion is to “resurface” your face altogether. Chemical peels help “shed” the older surface layer of the skin with a chemical agent. The younger skin underneath is brighter, more youthful, and often smoother in complexion. In theory, you’re getting rid of that dark spot by surfacing healthier cells.

SPF + Patience: While it’s not helpful to hear, your dark spots just need time to heal. However, Sara Moghaddam, M.D., of Vive Dermatology Surgery & Aesthetics, stresses the importance of using SPFs daily, in order to shield the dark spots from the sun. While it may seem like a nice tan will “mask” the dark spot, it’ll only worsen the discoloration. By shielding the skin from UV rays, you’ll heal faster.

Lasers: “For those patients who don’t wish to wait the months (or even years) for the color to fade, there are a variety of laser systems that can help diminish the color quicker,” says Benjamin Garden, M.D., of Physicians Laser and Dermatology Institute. “These lasers target the blood vessels that leave a red spot, or target the pigment in the skin that makes a dark mark. These laser systems are very powerful and should only be performed by a doctor who has the proper training.”

Can Men Use Women’s Skincare Products?

How to Treat Textural Irregularities (Boxcar, Rolling, or Ice Pick Acne Scars)

Sunscreen + Retinol: “Sunscreen and retinols are baseline,” reminds Avnee Shah, M.D., of The Dermatology Group in New Jersey. Add these habits into your daily regimen, and never abandon them. They work to thwart further damage from the sun, and smooth and firm the skin over time by stimulating collagen (while preventing additional acne, too).

Microneedling With or Without Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): “Microneedling works by creating micro-injuries a few millimeters into the skin,” says Shah. “This promotes collagen remodeling, which allows scarring to improve.” (More on this in a bit.)

“I love microneedling for acne scars,” adds Lilly-Rose Paraskevas, M.D., of Rose Dermatology. “With every treatment, the scars are shallower and less noticeable. Even the redness within the scars can be improved. Unlike some laser treatments, there’s no risk of burns or discoloration from microneedling.”

Many doctors will combine this with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which involves the extraction of your own plasma (by first drawing the blood and separating the plasma in one session), and injecting it into the area to stimulate healing. (PRP can be paired with laser therapy, too.)

“Lately I’ve been stunned by the combination of microneedling with radiofrequency, when used alone or in conjunction with PRP,” says Martinez-Diaz. “I’ve been using the device Secret RF by Cutera with outstanding results. The device enables me to treat a wide variety of acne scars in different depths.” Just note you’ll need a series of treatments, so it can get a bit pricy, but it’s worth it.

“PRP heals the acne scars even faster and leads to reduced inflammation and overall improvement of skin tone,” adds Matthew Elias, D.O., of Elias Dermatology. “It’s by far one of the most popular treatments in our office.”

How to Pop a Pimple (and When to Leave Your Face Alone)

Lasers: Lasers are another frequently used solution for permanent scars, and they penetrate the skin much like a microneedle to stimulate collagen production and smoothness. “When looking at lasers, I like either a Fraxel or something like an Erbium for deeper scars (Sciton Joule is the class leader here),” says Dhaval Bhanusali, M.D. Ask your own dermatologist about these options for his or her feedback on your specific condition. “Fraxel has a 3-4 day downtime and patients usually need 3-5 treatments, whereas the Erbium laser has more like a 7-10 day downtime and patients see significant improvement in 1-2 sessions,” Bhanusali says.

Certain fractional lasers, such as the Erbium, can often target just the damaged skin, while leaving healthy cells intact. The CO2 laser is another option: “If you have ‘ice pick’ scars, as in the deep, narrow kind, then Fractionated CO2 laser treatments are best,” says Anne Marie McNeill, M.D., of Newport Beach Dermatology & Plastic Surgery. “It gives a permanent improvement in scars and also in general skin texture.”

Fillers: You can inject collagen into the skin, and these fillers will “lift” certain areas so the skin appears more smooth, plumping up some of those indentations. This works best for wider scars, called “rolling” scars, says McNeill. For this, she says to ask your dermatologist about fillers, such as Bellafill. In many cases, Bellafill treatments can last 5-10 years.

“Bellafill affords a long-term solution to acne scars by adding volume to the scar and keeping it at the same level as the surrounding tissue,” adds Elias.

Speak to your dermatologist about the type of scarring you have, and the best type of treatment available.

The 5 Most Effective Ways to Regrow Thinning Hair

At the first sign of hair loss—or even before that, if you’re proactive—you should visit your board-certified dermatologist to discuss the latest and most effective retention and prevention tactics. (Assuming you want to keep your hair, that is.)

There are numerous options available to men now, and they each have extremely high success rates. We tapped our network of experts to get their opinions on the most common methods. Before we get into them, here’s what some of those board-certified dermatologists have to say about the road ahead.

1. Start Early

“We know the best chance to regrow, retain, and fortify hair is with early intervention,” says Robert Finney, M.D. of Heights Dermatology and Laser. “If you start to notice thinning, that’s when you should begin treatment. Don’t be in denial.”

The longer you wait, the less effective results are: “Men who begin to notice a bit of early thinning with hair loss starting at the vertex of their scalp, but who aren’t completely bald, have the best chance to slow down loss, halt loss altogether (by maintaining their hair density), and even regrow some or all of their hair,” says Laura Haygood, M.D., of Adagio Dermatology & Aesthetics. “This means the earlier you start, the better the results, in general.”

7 Biggest Grooming Mistakes Balding Men Make

2. Recession Is an Exception

“A receding frontal hairline rarely responds to treatment,” warns Haygood. “Men may focus on regrowing hair along the entirety of the frontal, crown, and vertex of the scalp.” The vertex is that transition point between the crown and midscalp.

3. Be Patient

“Whichever hair treatment you choose, it’s important not to give up on the treatment too quickly and stick with it for at least 3-6 months,” says Lindsey Yeh, M.D. It takes time for hair to grow and actually see changes.

You’re playing a long game (forever, even): “Once you notice improvement, you must maintain the treatment regimen to retain these results,” Haygood adds. “So, if and when you decide to stop treatment, the hair simply gradually reverts to the density it would have otherwise been at that point in your life.”

6 Best Fixes for Hair Loss

The 5 Best Methods to Regrow Hair

1. The Pill

One of the most common means of regrowing hair is a 1mg prescription of finasteride. (That’s its generic name. You may know it as Propecia.) It inhibits the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which gradually suffocates and shrinks hair follicles, causing hair to thin and fall away before the follicle dries up.

“Oral finasteride is a great treatment for male-pattern baldness,” says Anne Marie McNeill, Ph.D M.D. of Newport Beach Dermatology. “It’s simple, safe, and one study just showed it reduces your chance of prostate cancer, aside from helping to grow hair.” As we mentioned, start when you’re just starting to thin, and it’ll help you keep the hair you have.

“Oral finasteride is one of the best treatment options available,” echoes Finney. However, a small percentage of people can experience a sexual side effect, like decreased libido and erectile dysfunction. “If someone has tried this and experienced those side effects, or is concerned about them, I shift the discussion toward a topical finasteride and minoxidil combination, like HairStim by Hair Medicinals,” Finney says. “HairStim is a prescription solution that combines these drugs—and the minoxidil is at higher concentrations than you can get over the counter.” (See the next tip for more on minoxidil.) “I’ve found patients who had a sexual side effect from finasteride orally, don’t get it from topicals.” That’s because it’s not getting absorbed in your blood and traveling around your body.

Thinning Up Top? Here Are 5 Ways to Get Thicker, Fuller Hair

2. The Potion

The other at-home option you hear about most often is minoxidil, the generic for Rogaine. It works by stimulating blood circulation to hair follicles, which in turn fattens the hair shaft and strengthens the follicle. It’s administered as a topical solution or foam twice daily.

“One tip I share with patients is that there are special compounding pharmacies (often the Mom & Pop pharmacies we love, rather than the big chain pharmacies) who are happy to provide an even stronger version,” says Haygood. “Many of my patients like the 7% minoxidil, although in the end I recommend choosing based on cost, convenience, and how the product feels on your skin, especially since you’ll be using it on a daily basis.”

Nearly every doctor you consult will advise combination therapy to further boost your results, and a combination of finasteride + minoxidil is the most common pairing.

3. The Plasma
In the last couple years, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has grown enormously in popularity. It involves extracting one’s own blood, separating the plasma (which takes 10 minutes, in office), then injecting that plasma back into the patient’s scalp. Plasma has active growth factors that can stimulate inactive or weakened follicles. It’s also a common combination therapy method, paired with finasteride, minoxidil, or both.

“PRP is my favorite treatment for hair growth, and studies show 75 percent of men see [significant] hair growth,” says Anna Karp, D.O. of Skin Institute of New York. “I recommend two treatments, one month apart, at minimum.” (Many doctors will advocate for 4 monthly treatments out the gate, followed by an annual top-off.)

“PRP is natural and doesn’t require patients to remember to do anything at home,” says Finney. “It’s a much newer treatment, but has proven over the last several years to be a great option to regrow, retain, and fortify.”

PRP costs can vary from one doctor to the next, but you should expect to pay around $1,500 per treatment. (Yes, it’s quite expensive yet.)

How to Treat Thinning Hair: the Modern Guide

4. The Program
An effective at-home supplement and grooming regimen can also fortify hair and help revive some of the weakened, near-death follicles. It’s important to note that these are not nearly as promising as the above methods, but supplements are also no gimmick: They provide the nourishment your hair needs to stay strong. So, perhaps it’s as much a prevention and proactive method.

“We find by combining as many techniques as possible to combat all the possible causes we will yield the best results,” says Matthew Elias, D.O., of Elias Dermatology.

“I typically recommend a hair vitamin such as Nutrafol, Viviscal, or biotin forte with zinc,” says Lauren Meshkov Bonati, M.D., of Mountain Dermatology. “I also suggest they use Nioxin shampoo and conditioner.”

5. The Procedure
If all else fails, or if those patches are just too far along, it might be time to consider a hair transplant—if you’re that invested in this process. Talk to your doctor about the best options available, and for his or her recommendation on where to do it. This should really be a last resort, since results vary drastically.

Know that emerging technologies are suggesting we may soon be able to clone hairs and grow them anywhere we please. But in the meantime, this method extracts thicker hairs from the sides and back of your head, and places them in areas of inactive growth to “fill in” the hair. It takes a while to see results, too: After a couple months, the transplanted hair will fall out, only to begin its first new growth cycle. So, once that springs out and fills in, it could take 4-6 months to see lasting results (albeit temporary ones, if you aren’t proactive about retaining it this go around).

“I usually encourage patients to try topicals for 6+ months before deciding if it’s worked for them,” says Avnee Shah, M.D., of the Dermatology Group. “[Still then,] I encourage a combination of therapies. The more the merrier.”

The cost of hair transplants will increase with the amount of coverage you need, so it’s hard to estimate without first consulting your doctor. You can plan on it costing thousands of dollars, though—probably between $5-10K.

The 7 Best Customized Hair, Skin, and Cologne Brands for Men

In the grooming industry, 2019 will be known as the year of customized care. More and more brands are allowing consumers to identify concerns and goals as they pertain to skin, hair, hygiene, and more.

They ask you to complete online questionnaires—some simple, some insanely extensive—and pack their products with ingredients, and even scents, that address your wants and needs on a granular level. After all, if you’ve got curly, coarse, and oily hair as well as dandruff, your shampoo and conditioner should have different ingredients than the guy with straight, fine hair with no flaking. Think of all the possible skincare combinations, too, when you factor in oil levels, age, environmental factors, and more.

Here are seven brands that helped launch the phenomenon, and each company’s approach to customized products. If you’re less than satisfied with your current regimen, it might be time to invest in something tailored precisely to you.

The Best Men’s Grooming Products to Take on the Go

Function Of

What it's for: Customized hair care

The Function Of Beauty site prompts you to create your hair profile. Is it wavy, curly, or straight? Is it fine or coarse? Oily or dry, or neither? Next, you input up to five “hair goals”, which could be anything from soothing your scalp to volumizing, oil control to minimizing frizz. This all determines which ingredients go into each product. You pick individual colors for your shampoo and conditioner set, as well as a scent, and the brand even prints your name on the side of each bottle. Costs vary depending on the sizes you order, but if you get 16 oz. bottles of shampoo and conditioner (which should last 3 months), it's under $50.

What it's for: Customized skincare

Curology's online quiz asks about your major skincare concerns and goals, then generates a “superbottle” night cream just for you (once a dermatologist reviews your results). Apply it before you sleep, so your skin’s overnight regenerative cycle works with the product to correct things like acne, signs of aging, or uneven skin tone. You can order the superbottle along with a standard cleanser and daytime moisturizer, too, or just opt for the standalone night cream.

What it's for: Customized skincare

With the recent launch of iD, Clinique enters the custom skincare game with its own refined approach to the process. First, you pick your base—moisturizing lotion, oil-control gel, or hydrating jelly—then you select your “insert cartridge” from the list of five: fatigue, lines & wrinkles, pores & uneven texture, irritation, or uneven skin tone. Any of the 15 potential results costs comes in under $40.

What it's for: Customized fragrance and hygiene

Hawthorne works with some of the industry’s most sought-after perfumers to create a bunch of different fragrances to match each customer’s personality. You fill out their quiz that factors in things like diet and personal interests, and they set you up with two fragrances: one for “work” and one for “play”, both for a total $100. They complement each other nicely, but more importantly, they complement you. And just recently, Hawthorne expanded into scented deodorant, soap, and body wash, too, so you can smell and feel as fresh as each scent you’re “prescribed”—whether you’re wearing it or not.

What it's for: Customized skincare

Geologie's diagnostic quiz is a little simpler than the competition, but that’s not to any detriment: They still address the core things like aging, inflammation, acne, and so forth, with dozens of possible outcomes for the five-product assortment they’ll send you. First they’ll start you on a 30-day trial with the entire set—cleansers for your sink and shower, moisturizers for day and night, and an eye cream. After you test them out, you can order a 90-day supply of whichever products you like best, or all of them if you so choose.

What it's for: Hair care

Prose's quiz asks you questions about your hair’s thickness, length, typical hair fall patterns, oil levels, as well as your diet, zip code (to determine pollution), and more. You tell Prose your goals, what kind of fragrance to plug into the formula, and then Prose generates a product to target your key concerns—with various levels of intensity (like if you’ve got severe dandruff but moderate oil production). They give you the option of a pre-shampoo hair mask, shampoo, and conditioner, all for $88, or you can pick and choose the ones you want to buy (for $38, $25, $25, respectively). There’s a hair oil launching in spring, as well, which can then be added to your order.

What it's for: Customized skincare

Proven is the most complex of the customized skincare companies, since it uses a database called the Skin Genome Project to create its products: The SGP crawls 20,238 skincare ingredients, 100,000 products, 8 million testimonials, and over 4,000 scientific journal articles to identify the most effective and favorable results for Proven’s clients. When you complete their extensive skincare profile—which even factors in the water quality of your zip code—a dermo reviews the data and prescribes a 3-product set, including a customized cleanser, moisturizer, and night cream, all of which have ingredients tailored to your various needs. The 2-month supply runs $145, but the steeper cost is worth the upgrade if you want the most tailored fit of all.

5 Things You Should Consider When Buying a Pre-Owned Watch

When it comes to shopping for your next luxury watch, you should begin your search by first asking yourself a few simple questions.

“What is your budget? Start there,” says Nathan Nerswick, a client services manager at Crown & Caliber, the Atlanta-based online watch shop where you can sell luxury timepieces and buy everything from a used OMEGA Speedmaster to a Rolex GMT-Master II.

“A lot of people don’t want to talk about money, but I think that’s kind of a baseline,” Nerswick tells Men’s Journal in the video above. “You need to be able to say, ‘Hey, I’m willing to spend $5,000.’ Cool, let’s look at $5,000 watches.”

Inside the Lab: Crown & Caliber, the Online Luxury Watch Shop

Knowing your budget can help you narrow down your search, especially when you’re looking at the endless options online. Next, Nerswick explains to also focus on the other watches you own. “There’s a big difference between it being your first watch or your fifth watch,” he says, “and so that can really inform the direction we’re going.” But there’s plenty more to consider, especially for the place you’re buying the watch from.

“When you’re looking to buy a watch from anyone—certainly online—the No. 1 thing you need to ask them is if they have actual trained watchmakers,” says Jason Allen, Crown & Caliber’s chief marketing officer. The online shop has its own in-house watchmakers in Atlanta who authenticate and work on every watch that goes up on the brand’s website.

Find out even more must-know watch-buying tips from the pros at Crown & Caliber above.
